About Martha
My life has been a winding journey as I’ve worked to discover what my great passion is. My path has led me from a BA in French Studies → Master’s degree in Public Health → full-time photographer → whenever-I-can-squeeze-it-in writer. I am so happy that I’ve finally found something that both challenges and fulfills me, that keeps me learning and growing—and hopefully adding to the enjoyment of others. I use whatever time I can to write and research, but when I’m not writing, I’m laughing at my rascally toddler twin boys, relaxing on the couch with my husband, and finding cheaper ways to travel the world.
More about me
How did you get into writing?
Honestly, I’m embarrassed about this, but I was reading a book and thought, “Psht! I could write this.” So I tried. And I ate humble pie for a loooong time because guess what? Writing fiction is dang hard! I have so much to learn.
Why do you write in the Regency era?
When I’m reading for entertainment, my go-to books are by Georgette Heyer. So when ideas come to my head, they are usually set in the Regency era. The rules of Regency high society provide a lot of fascinating possible scenarios—they also are so strict that it’s a challenge to work within the framework at times. It’s a fun—and sometimes maddening—time period to write about.
What else do you do?
I keep my twins alive. Ha! But seriously, it’s not easy. I also do photography (I did it full-time before having my boys) and am always looking for excuses to travel. I got the travel bug when I was a 17 year old exchange student in France and have made it a priority ever since.
